Grand Master  Cairney

Branch Owner & Grand Master

Training, teaching, developing and growing Korean martial arts since 1979

Melbourne Hapkido Academy unofficial journey started in 1979 when Grand Master Cairney started his martial arts training at a young age in Wollongong NSW with Judo.

Moving to Taekwondo in 1979 he achieved 2nd Dan as well establishing a branch in the area in the 1980’s.

Grand Master Cairney started his Hapkido journey when he moved to Melbourne in 1993 and eight years later established Melbourne Hapkido Academy in 2001 at the Holy Trinity in Kew.

In 2005 Melbourne Hapkido Academy moved into its’ first full-time permanent training centre. Then in 2013 Grand Master Cairney established Melbourne Hapkido Academy’s current permanent purpose built training centre, the first Hapkido school to do so in Melbourne.

In addition to Hapkido, Grand Master Cairney, since 1995, has been studying and practising Sundo – Korean Zen Buddhist meditation, philosophy and exercise.  20 years later in 2015 Grand Master Cairney introduced HapKi-Sundo, bringing the Zen in to martial arts training, giving students a more complete picture of Korean martial arts traditions and training.

Grand Master Cairney has a dedicated team of skilled and qualified instructors and black belts at Melbourne Hapkido Academy.  Grand Master Cairney would like to invite you to train with him and everyone at Melbourne Hapkido Academy in learning the ultimate martial art – Hapkido. Grand Master Cairney started his journey in 1975, it is never to late to start, begin your complete martial arts journey today (click here).

Melbourne Hapkido Academy

안녕하서Annyeonghaseo,
With most of Melbourne’s schools going back to online learning for the rest of the year, more than ever we need to support our teachers, school admin and school communities. It is tough. We thank all teachers and staff for supporting our kids education.

Melbourne Hapkido Academy

안녕하서Annyeonghaseo,

We are back Zooming classes from Saturday 11th July. Tonight, Wednesday 8th July, is the last class at the dojang for at least six weeks.

Remember not many other activities or sports can be practised at home while under lock-down. However we all can do Hapkido to keep fit and healthy physically and mentally.

With the possibility of schools heading back to #onlinelearning for the last school term for 2020 more than ever having a Hapkido training routine is important for your health and well-being.

To get a few things ready for the second lock-down there will be no class Thursday 9th July. Therefore we will see ALL Students at 10:00am Saturday 11th July via Zoom. Go to the Facebook Student Group or log-in on the Web site for more details.

깜사함니다

Remember you have a vast library of training resources online with: over 135 videos; 25 live classes; 8 weeks of Hapki-Sundo training; gradings online; over 3500 photos; App integration; Facebook feeds; exercises, activities and much more.

Melbourne Hapkido Academy

안녕하서Annyeonghaseo,
The Melbourne metropolitan area has been put back in to lock down effective from midnight (11:59pm) Wednesday 8th July.

Melbourne Hapkido Academy is in the best position to carry on under the lock down with:
Live secure Zoom classes ready to go.
Over 135 training videos online.
Over 25 existing classes online.
Eight (8) weeks of Hapki-Sundo sessions online.
Dozens of online activities, and much more.

There are only four reasons to be out: to get food; medical needs or care giving; work (from home if you can); or exercise (no more than two people or families). School holidays have been extended for a week pending further announcements (VCE students exempted).

Remember, you cannot do many other sports at home (football, tennis, golf, swimming, lawn bowls) however YOU CAN practice Hapkido at home.

Warm wishes to everyone, keep safe, wash hands, keep your distance.
